Mission

Mission: Breach the Surface is a 501(c)3 organization improving ocean literacy through inclusive and equitable marine conservation education. Shockingly, an estimated 35% of United States K-12 youth can’t identify a single ocean-related issue. Since its incorporation in 2020, Breach the Surface has introduced an array of programs that address ocean literacy gaps while providing educators and youth with free ocean conservation educational resources. Vision: To conserve our oceans, it's crucial to educate youth about current threats and inspire them to become the next generation of change-makers. Values: Education: Committed to improving ocean literacy through comprehensive marine conservation education. Inclusivity: Ensuring that educational programs are accessible and equitable for all students and educators. Equity: Providing resources and opportunities to underserved and underrepresented communities. Conservation: Promoting the protection and preservation of ocean ecosystems. Awareness: Raising awareness about ocean-related issues among K-12 youth. Community Engagement: Engaging educators and youth in meaningful ocean conservation activities.

Our greatest accomplishment last year

Shellphone is the podcast that gives the ocean its very own hotline! Host, Harmony Dawson, and guests discuss ways to preserve and rehabilitate our home, providing information and perspectives to listeners who might not otherwise have access to them. Past and upcoming guests include activists, educators, and researchers from organizations and universities including Save the Manatee Club, Tampa Bay Watch, Florida Atlantic University, Project HIU, and more. Shellphone has a reach of 1000+ with less that 12 episodes currently out to the public and is booked for interviews through the next 6 months.

Reasons to serve on our board

1. We're not afraid to disrupt the 'current' within old, strict systems. 2. Breach is young and impressionable. New board members will find that their teachings and experiences will be utilized to the fullest here. 3. This is a volunteer-based board, and hours can be provided toward certification or other needs, if necessary. 4. Breach programs tackle more than ocean-related issues. Indirectly, you will find that Breach aids diversity and inclusion within ocean-related spaces, bridges gaps within disenfranchised communities and schools, and more.
