This two-part series helps nonprofit leaders and board members understand how to enhance their organization’s reputation and relevance in a time of unlimited data and third-party evaluations. Following these sessions, you’ll understand how to think differently about reporting and more effectively tell your impact story.
This series is critical for anyone who speaks with current or potential donors about your organization’s impact, especially executive leaders, board members, grant writers, communications staff and fundraisers.
Session 1-How to Understand and Improve Your Communication with Charity Watchdog Groups

The media encourages donors to consider third-party evaluations when determining if a nonprofit is effective and worthy of their support. Additionally, with unlimited data just a click away, Millennials and Gen Z want to know how nonprofits are using their funds, often looking to Charity Navigator rankings and GuideStar’s communications platform before making charitable gifts. What do these ratings really mean? What data is used to formulate them and how do they affect your nonprofit’s reputation? What should you be paying attention to (or not) when it comes to elevating your scores?
In this class, you will:
- Understand what the GuideStar and Charity Navigator evaluation processes look like and what their results mean for your organization and our nonprofit sector
- Learn the strengths and weaknesses of third-party evaluations
- Be able to develop a strategy to use these evaluations for your nonprofit
Session 2-How to Demonstrate Your Community Impact: Thinking Differently About Reporting

Nonprofit communications platform GuideStar recommends that every nonprofit is responsible for communicating its impact. But how do you do that effectively beyond dollars raised and constituents served?
This class will help you think differently about reporting to showcase your supporters’ social return on investment and true mission impact. Specifically, you will:
- Review best practice case studies, including community impact reports from the Conn Memorial Foundation’s education initiatives
- See a real-world example of a nonprofit that adopted GuideStar’s questions to communicate their community impact
- Learn from a funder and collaborator perspective what partners are looking for to motivate continued or new support
- Understand the necessary components to create a meaningful impact report for your organization
- Receive a template/checklist for effectively articulating and presenting your organization’s community impact report
For nearly three decades, Sheff Crowder has led the Conn Memorial Foundation, analyzing community organizations and their impact. As a funder and facilitator for several collaborative initiatives, he will provide valuable insights for how nonprofit leaders can demonstrate a social return on their investment to donors, funders and key stakeholders using his organization’s community impact reports as a case study.

NLC/Children’s Board of Hillsborough County No-Show Policy – effective July 1, 2018
The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County (CBHC) has asked NLC to reframe our no-show policy for their providers.
Effective July 1, 2018 CBHC-funded organizations using codes to claim CBHC-funded seats at NLC trainings or events will be responsible for payment of registration and processing fees in the event of a no-show. Please read the full no-show policy here.
