Disasters, both humanmade and natural, are a regular occurrence in our lives. Just because you are prepared for a hurricane, doesn’t mean you are ready for a mass shooting, event, or flood. All disasters are different and require you to prepare and respond accordingly — as individuals and as nonprofit leaders.

In this two-part disaster preparedness series, you’ll learn how to prepare for emergencies, both personally and professionally. Classes are dynamic and include small group breakout sessions, individual participation and teach-back opportunities.

Personal Preparedness

In the first course, we’ll address personal preparedness. You will learn best practices for humanmade and natural disasters and understand pertinent information related to where you live and its hazards. The confidence of knowing you have plans in place will support the others in your life for whom you have responsibility.  While the focus of this course is natural disasters, public health crisis will be included as a backdrop for the differing types of steps one might take to prepare most fully.

Organizational Preparedness

In the second course, we will focus on organizational preparedness to ensure your nonprofit is ready for “the next one,” whatever type of disaster that may be. Understanding your organizational needs, staff preparedness, continuity of operations and how to be ready for any event no matter the size is what will protect and sustain your organization. The confidence of knowing you have plans in place, staff that is well trained and backups ready to go will make you more responsive and less likely to suffer significant setbacks after a disaster. We will discuss operational boundaries, policymaking, and planning using an “all-hazards” approach.

Who should attend this class?

Preparing for the worst for your family and your organization will allow you to be more available to your community no matter what “community” means to you. This class is good for anyone who wants and needs to personally and professionally prepare for a disaster, especially in Florida. Nonprofit decision-makers who want more clarity on disaster preparedness and staff with policymaking responsibilities will especially benefit.

After obtaining a degree in Health Sciences and Public Policy from the University of Aberdeen, in Scotland Kate McPherson discovered her passion for disaster work. She comes to Florida after a long history of Disaster Planning, Response and Recovery work in North Carolina. Initially with Public Health Preparedness & Response, the state of North Carolina’s preeminent Public Health Disaster Team, eventually starting her own Preparedness Consultancy. She went on to expanded roles as the Disaster Preparedness and Response Coordinator for NC Division of Mental Health.

She has led the Tampa Bay Area’s Recovery efforts since Hurricane Irma as the Executive Director of the Recover Tampa Bay Initiative. She is also the Co-Chair of the Florida Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster’s (FLVOAD) Long Term Recovery Workgroup.

Kate lives in Tampa, Florida and is currently owned by a Labrador retriever, a yorkie and a three-legged pit mix.

NLC/Children’s Board of Hillsborough County No-Show Policy – effective July 1, 2018
The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County (CBHC) has asked NLC to reframe our no-show policy for their providers.

Effective July 1, 2018 CBHC-funded organizations using codes to claim CBHC-funded seats at NLC trainings or events will be responsible for payment of registration and processing fees in the event of a no-show. Please read the full no-show policy here.
