It’s exciting moving into your first management role, but it requires learning and developing new skills that aren’t always clear. In this 3-part series, you will learn the skills needed to make the transition successfully so that you bring out the best in your team members.
This training is ideal for those that are new to managing and those that would like to deepen their skills in effectively managing others.
In this 4-hour workshop you will learn the biggest mistake new managers make and how to avoid it. Explore:
- Your role is changing: Understand how to make the shift and set a vision for the kind of leader you want to be.
- Moving from doer to delegator: Let go of Superhero Syndrome to delegate effectively across the skill levels of each team member.
- Great expectations: Set clear expectations for your team so they know what success looks like, and learn about the team’s expectations of you (yes, they have them).
- Time management: Your team will appreciate you respecting their time through effective meeting management, evaluating work loads for hidden time wasters, and updating procedures that streamline how work gets done.
In this class you will walk away with practical tools for creating core competencies and making the most of team member time that you can implement right away.

Kathy McDonald is the assistant director for network partnerships for the Florida College Access Network. Kathy has helped individuals, leaders and teams find and leverage their strengths for the last 18 years. She is an experience workshop leader and speaker, developing adult professional development programs for numerous organizations including Accenture, PwC, the City of Chicago, and the Hillsborough Education Foundation.
She is co-author of CREATING YOUR LIFE COLLAGE: STRATEGIES FOR SOLVING THE WORK/LIFE DILEMMA (Three Rivers Press). Kathy holds an MBA from Northwestern University and is a certified leadership coach from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. Happily married for 25 years, Kathy is the proud mother of two teenagers and currently 3 dogs (small, medium and large) and is an avid gardener, though she admits gardening in Florida is a contact sport.
Kathy’s training approach is to ensure participants walk away with actionable tools and resources while creating a space that encourages learning and growing together.

NLC/Children’s Board of Hillsborough County No-Show Policy – effective July 1, 2018
The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County (CBHC) has asked NLC to reframe our no-show policy for their providers.
Effective July 1, CBHC-funded organizations using codes to claim CBHC-funded seats at NLC trainings or events will be responsible for payment of registration and processing fees in the event of a no-show. Please read the full no-show policy here.
