The Nonprofit Leadership Center’s Board Governance Rock Star Certificate series is a six-hour program over two evenings that covers the fundamental nonprofit governance concepts every nonprofit leader should understand and practice. If you want to serve a chosen organization with passion and impact, this is the certificate for you.

During these engaging and interactive sessions, you’ll explore case studies and learn best practices for board structure and practices, board member roles and responsibilities, and financial and legal oversight. You’ll also build an invaluable network of nonprofit leaders that you can consult anytime.

Meet Your Trainers

Photo of Emily Benham, CEO of the Nonprofit Leadership Center

Emily Benham, FAHP, CFRE has more than 30 years of experience in the nonprofit field. Before taking on the role of CEO of the Nonprofit Leadership Center in 2014, Emily was the Interim President for Bayfront HERO (Health, Education and Research Organization), a health legacy foundation formed in 2013 with the net proceeds of the sale of Bayfront Medical Center to a for profit entity. Prior to the sale, she was a member of Bayfront Medical Center’s senior leadership team, and directed its philanthropic arm (Bayfront Health Foundation) for more than 20 years, raising millions of dollars for capital improvements for the hospital. Bayfront Health Foundation’s signature event “Bayfront on Vine” and the record breaking “Extreme Team Challenge” employee campaign became well known nationally throughout the industry as Emily was asked to present frequently on these “best of breed” fundraisers. In 2008 she achieved the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy’s highest level of certification, FAHP.

Prior to her work in healthcare philanthropy, Emily led fund development efforts at the Florida Orchestra, American Stage, and the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami. Early in her career, following a fellowship in orchestra management, she was the Executive Director of the Evansville (IN) Philharmonic and the South Dakota Symphony.

 

Dr. Maureen Butler, PhD, CPA is executive vice president of Vistra Communications and an adjunct professor of accounting at The University of Tampa where she teaches financial management in the UT graduate-level Certificate in Nonprofit Management program. Prior to joining Vistra full time, Dr. Butler was on the faculty of the University of South Florida and then tenured at The University of Tampa. Dr. Butler served in the US Army Finance Corps. She is a CPA, licensed in Virginia and Florida, and has worked as an accountant with a property management company and a small CPA firm. Dr. Butler also has experience consulting and providing accounting services to small businesses and nonprofit organizations.

Dr. Butler holds a BS in Accounting from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. She has been actively involved with several nonprofit organizations and schools, formerly serving as a member and treasurer of the Nonprofit Leadership Center board of directors. She is currently a member of the Hillsborough Education Foundation Program Oversight Committee and works with CEOs in Schools.


CFRE Continuing Education Points
Full participation in each class is applicable for 4.0 points per class in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.
