Session 1: How to be a Nonprofit Board Rock Star

Join NLC CEO Emily Benham, FAHP, CFRE, for a three-hour, interactive learning experience designed to show case the best of the best in:
- identification, recruitment, orientation, and even release of board members
- the board-staff partnership
- the board’s fundraising role
- board member motivation, responsibilities, and accountability, including conflicts of interest
- and competing governance models and governance trends.
Session 2: Essentials for a Rock Star Board Meeting

Take a deeper dive into what makes Rock Star Boards work so well. Learn about the most efficient and effective ways to utilize committees and run your meetings. What exactly is an Executive Committee meeting, anyway? And when do you call one? What do those financial reports mean? And what questions should you be asking? Emily Benham, FAHP, CFREwill be joined by Nancy Ridenour, CPA to lay out the processes and information that Rock Star Boards need to operate at peak efficiency and greatest impact.

- the board’s role in financial oversight
- your nonprofit’s financial statements
- budgeting & cash flow management
- audits & IRS filings
Emily Benham, FAHP, CFRE has more than 30 years of experience in the nonprofit field. Before taking on the role of CEO of the Nonprofit Leadership Center in 2014, Emily was the Interim President for Bayfront HERO (Health, Education and Research Organization), a health legacy foundation formed in 2013 with the net proceeds of the sale of Bayfront Medical Center to a for profit entity. Prior to the sale, she was a member of Bayfront Medical Center’s senior leadership team, and directed its philanthropic arm (Bayfront Health Foundation) for more than 20 years, raising millions of dollars for capital improvements for the hospital. Bayfront Health Foundation’s signature event “Bayfront on Vine” and the record breaking “Extreme Team Challenge” employee campaign became well known nationally throughout the industry as Emily was asked to present frequently on these “best of breed” fundraisers. In 2008 she achieved the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy’s highest level of certification, FAHP.
Prior to her work in healthcare philanthropy, Emily led fund development efforts at the Florida Orchestra, American Stage, and the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami.
Early in her career, following a fellowship in orchestra management, she was the Executive Director of the Evansville (IN) Philharmonic and the South Dakota Symphony.
She is a native of Reading, Pennsylvania, and received her B.A. in Music from Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. She is married to James Connors, Principal Cellist of The Florida Orchestra. They are proud parents of their son Joshua. Emily is also an avid equestrian and competes regionally in dressage with her equine partner, Current Affair.
Nancy M. Ridenour , CPA, CFE, CFF has extensive experience in auditing, forensic accounting, and fraud investigations. Nancy has over 23 years experience in public accounting and is a shareholder with PDR Certified Public Accountants. From an industry perspective, she focuses on not-for-profit organizations, senior housing, and healthcare. Nancy is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA). Nancy is a volunteer/program presenter for the Nonprofit Leadership Center of Tampa Bay – providing training for board members. Nancy is a Certified Fraud Examiner and member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
Nancy is currently active on several not-for-profit boards including: Morton Plant Mease Health System, Homeless Empowerment Program, Advocare Trust, Mease Manor Retirement Community, Random Acts of Flowers of Tampa Bay, Diocesan Finance Council for the Diocese of St. Petersburg, FL, and Pinellas County Health Facilities Authority. She also serves on the audit committee for Community Foundation of Tampa Bay and BayCare.
