Position Summary/ Business Need

The CEO of the Nonprofit Leadership Center of Tampa Bay (NLC) is the leader of one of the state’s largest and oldest capacity building organizations.  As the NLC embarks upon the executive search for their next CEO, NLC seeks an ambassador and champion for the nonprofit sector with a demonstrated passion for lifelong learning. This executive will be a thought leader in the community and will provide the vision for NLC’s strategic programming in response to the nonprofit sector’s emerging needs. This leader will have exceptional relationship building and fund development skills with a demonstrated track record of success. The CEO will be skilled in forging multi sector partnerships between corporate, government and nonprofit entities, including funders, board members and nonprofit leaders with diverse backgrounds and interests. This leader will bring an entrepreneurial spirit along with fiscal discipline to the organization’s operations, leading a highly skilled staff towards continuous quality and goal achievement. The CEO reports to the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities

External – Community Facing 70%

  • Champions the work of nonprofits and NLC throughout the region to increase impact.
  • Acts as the organization’s Chief Development Officer, partnering with the Board to achieve contributed revenue goals.
  • Engages in business development to grow NLC’s influence, impact and program offerings.
  • Negotiates and implements partnership agreements and contracts with organizations including businesses, nonprofits, government, and educational institutions.
  • Provides recommendations to the Board of Directors with respect to the creation of policies, programs, and the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Provides training and/or consulting in areas of expertise.

 

Internal – 30%

  • Manages the finances of the corporation, including the development and implementation of the annual budget.
  • Leads the staff in the development and implementation of annual action plans with supporting goals and metrics.
  • Administers the overall operation of the corporation, including reviewing and evaluating the results of program activities, ensuring that continuing contractual obligations are being fulfilled, allocating resources for greater program effectiveness and efficiency, and developing organizational and administrative policies for Board approval.
  • Manages the organization’s paid staff including hiring and developing employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Position Qualifications

  • Knowledge & Experience
  • 7-10 years of experience in a professional leadership role in the nonprofit sector
  • 5 years of experience working directly with a nonprofit Board of Directors.
  • 6 years of direct fund development experience, including face to face solicitation. CFRE preferred.
  • Working knowledge and recent experience of best practices in nonprofit leadership, fiscal/organizational management, fund development and the administration of grants.
  • Demonstrated success in goal achievement, including fundraising.
  • Strong understanding of managing a small nonprofit organization.
  • Track record as a nonprofit thought leader with published whitepapers and blogs as demonstrated through writing samples.
  • Experience with marketing and public relations is a plus, as is knowledge of the Tampa Bay area.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.  MA, MSW, MBA or commensurate work experience preferred.

Skills

  • Proven ability to teach, train and/or consult in the nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively — in both written and oral form — with multiple audiences including board, staff, and members of the community.
  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret general business information, financial reports, legal documents, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Tech savvy including competence in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Zoom and other virtual platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage social media including LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, etc.
