Black Friday…Cyber Monday…#GivingTuesday
Where did Giving Tuesday come from? What’s it doing there with 2 huge consumer focused shopping days?
Giving Tuesday is a movement to create a national day of giving to kick off the giving season added to the calendar on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. The second annual Giving Tuesday is on December 3, 2013. In the same way retail stores take part in Black Friday and online retailers encourage Cyber Monday, the nonprofit sector has the opportunity to encourage giving to support our causes. Because of its social nature, #GivingTuesday is quickly becoming a social media force.
In Tampa Bay, four philanthropic organizations have come together to promote #GivingTuesday to our community: Association of Fundraising Professionals Suncoast Chapter, Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, United Way Suncoast and the Nonprofit Leadership Center of Tampa Bay. Because of our work with nonprofits, we know – first hand – that our community will be better for it.
In 2012, the first year of #GivingTuesday, 2,500 organizations participated. Did it work? #GivingTuesday reports that Blackbaud calculated a 53% increase when compared to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. DonorPerfect recorded a 46% increase and a 25% in average gift size. Paypal mobile donations soared 487%. Besides increases in giving, the movement garnered 2.5 million social media impressions and was publically mentioned by Bill Gates the White House and numerous socially-conscious celebrities on their social media channels.
What does this mean for you? If you are with a nonprofit organization, join us for a FREE informational session to learn how this can boost the donations you receive this year. Giving Tuesday can be incorporated into your current year-end solicitations or it can be a starting point to create a year-end giving campaign.
