Florida Museum of Photographic Arts – FMoPA
Job Description
Role: Executive Director
Reports to: Board of Directors; Board Chair
Reporting to the Chair, Board of Directors (BOD),the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMOPA) staff, programs, vision and mission.
Specific Duties and responsibilities include:
The Executive Director (ED) is the official head of the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMOPA) and leads, directs, manages, and supervises all organization operations. The ED is hired by the Board of Directors (BOD), reports directly to the Board Chair, and in conjunction with them, carries out the vision and mission of FMOPA to ensure its long-term viability and service to the community. The specific duties of the Executive Director include, but are not limited to:
LEADERSHIP AND PLANNING
1. Responsible for the total operations of the FMOPA including budgeting, record keeping, development, security, education, finance, programmatic oversight, marketing, insurance, daily activities and other duties as designed
2. Recruits, supervises and evaluates staff and oversees volunteer management
3. Creates and maintains organizational procedures for staff and day-to-day operations
4. Responsible for Museum store management including ordering, pricing, taxes, and record keeping
5. Collaboration with the Board of Directors on strategic planning activities for organizational advancement
6.Develops annual operating plan to support the goals in the FMOPA’s strategic plan
7. Promotes a culture that reflects the FMoPA’s values and bylaws
8. Overall stewardship of the organization within the community; cultivating, maintaining and building valuable relationships
Exhibitions, Programmatic Planning & Quality Assurance
1. Oversees high-quality annual exhibitions and programming supporting the curatorial department, in conjunction with Curator, oversee preservation of collection, new artist outreach, community involvement, programming design, curriculum development, master calendar of activities preparation, program evaluation, marketing, etc.
2. Responsible for event management including staffing, scheduling, contracts, supplies, and oversight
3. Maintains awareness of current and future trends to ensure continuous, cutting-edge activities
4. Collects and organizes data and establishes reporting mechanisms (dashboard) to analyze programs and gather feedback from customers ensuring program success and grant fulfillments
Fiscal Management, Financial Planning and Development
1. Collaborates with designated BOD members to develop and present an annual operating budget to the full Board for review
2. Collaborates with bookkeeper while being responsible for day-to-day financial operations including bill paying, submission of payroll, and record-keeping for salaries, taxes and non-profit status
3. Creates and executes short and long-term development plans including individual donors, foundations, public sources, private sector and events in partnership with the Development Committee Chairperson
4. Provides leadership for soliciting charitable funds and donor relations in collaboration with BOD members and volunteers
5. Works actively to increase membership and sets annual goals for the same
6. Provides content, oversees, and pursues grants and new sources of revenue to enhance the organization’s operating and capital funds
7. Works with the BOD to ensure the FMOPA’s advancement and long-term financial stability while maintaining consistent communication with the Board Finance Chair & Board at large on all fiscal developments
8. Develops and executes a transformational capital campaign including an endowment in partnership with the Board
9. Creates revenue-generating programs ( summer camps, event rentals, etc) and new profit centers (retail and food and beverage)
Education and Community Partnerships
1. Possesses awareness of the artistic community and a willingness to cultivate relationships with Photographic Museums and arts centers locally, statewide and nationally
2. Serves as the primary representative for the FMOPA and seeks to establish a positive presence within the community in partnership with the Board President
3. Acts as a liaison between the FMOPA and local, County and State officials, plus engages the community (businesses & residents) to build relationships, champion programs and enhance long-term viability
4. Seeks out partnerships and works cooperatively with other arts organizations to develop new audiences and supporters
5. Solicits new Board candidates, general members, and others who would support BAC activities 6. Ensures the FMOPA mission, vision, goals, and activities are consistently communicated effectively
Board/Staff Collaboration
1. Serves as an ex-officio member of the BOD and all related committees, as needed or requested
2. Promotes a collaborative work relationship between Board members and staff, and encourages teamwork 3. Supports the operations and administration of the BOD by advising, informing and providing necessary reports in a timely manner
4. Advises the BOD on the development of policies and strategic initiatives that will strengthen the BAC
Personal Qualities & Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s Degree Required, 5-10 years of experience in a leadership role of a non-profit position with proven success and highly adept at fundraising
2. Passion for photography and realistic, creative, and bold vision for the future of the FMOPA
3. Experienced leader, problem-solver, and fiscal steward who values a collaborative management style
4. Exhibits a “can do” positive attitude and maintains a warm and welcoming organizational culture
5. Possesses a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of an organization
6. Highly effective verbal and written communicator internally and externally; able to build support and
consensus by listening well and synthesizing information clearly to explain objectives; ability to identify and capitalize on public relations/marketing opportunities as they arise
7. Experienced fundraiser with a track record of closing major gifts from individual donors, foundations, government sources, and corporations
8. Strong interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence and experience leading, collaborating and valuing others’ work and ideas
9. Ability to think in strategic, analytical, and political ways, particularly about issues affecting the creative arts; understanding of the public policy process
10. Entrepreneurial; self-starter willing to embrace change and innovation
