The Certificate in Volunteer Management prepares today’s volunteer managers to more effectively recruit, retain and recognize volunteers. Developed to address the challenges all volunteer managers encounter, the curriculum is designed by Hands On Network, the volunteer-focused arm of Points of Light Institute. In this three-session certificate program, NLC Trainer Sara Leonard, MBA, CFRE, will lead you through interactive exercises to gain knowledge and skills to use immediately when you get back to your organization.
Learn the foundation of volunteer management, including current trends in volunteerism, the elements of a successful volunteer program and volunteer motivations.
Planning Your Volunteer Program
Review the steps required to effectively plan a volunteer program, including conducting needs assessments, your volunteer program budget and appropriate roles for your program volunteers.
Recruiting and Placing Volunteers
Learn effective steps for volunteer recruitment and placement and plan how to improve these processes. You’ll also learn about local and national resources that can connect you to prospective volunteers for your agency.
Orienting and Training Volunteers
Learn how to train volunteers to perform effectively and enjoyably, increase your comfort level in planning volunteer trainings and develop plans for improving your volunteer training.
Volunteer supervision can be as time intensive as staff supervision. This module will help you increase your ability to design and use volunteer supervision strategies, and design next steps for improved management.
Evaluating Your Volunteer Program
The last module addresses the evaluation of your current or growing program. You should be able to increase your ability to plan, evaluate and develop steps for a continual evaluation process.
Participants must attend all 3 sessions, complete assignments and pass section quizzes to receive the Certificate in Volunteer Management. You must attend session 1 in order to continue to subsequent sessions! Missing sessions 2 or 3 will delay the ability to complete the program as missed sessions must be made up at a future time. Certificates are awarded by the Florida Association for Volunteer Resource Management (FAVRM).

Meet Your Trainer
Sara Leonard, MBA, CFRE, is a solutions-oriented advancement professional with over 25 years’ experience in development and administration in the nonprofit field. She is a Certified Fundraising Executive and has been named as a Master Trainer by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Sara has worked in the nonprofit sector raising funds for healthcare, educational and cultural organizations. She managed development operations including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors, managing annual giving, major gift cultivation and solicitation, training and management of staff, board and volunteers, foundation and corporate support, sponsorships, annual funds, special events and in-kind support.
The founding director of the Nonprofit Leadership Center’s Fund Development Academy, Sara launched the Sara Leonard Group in April 2015 to provide consulting, coaching and training to fundraisers, CEO’s and nonprofit board members.
Safety and Health Protocols for In-Person Classes
The safety and health of all visitors, students, trainers and staff is our top priority.
The Nonprofit Leadership Center is taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of guests and participants for all in-person training sessions:
- We are following all federal health and safety guidelines, as well as guidance from state and local governments. Depending on the community spread of COVID-19, this may include protocols such as wearing face coverings and social distancing. Registrants will receive an email from NLC one week prior to each in-person training session that outlines specific protocols to expect on the event day.
- We are using enhanced protocols and practices to keep our Training Room healthy and safe.
- Training Room capacity is limited to ensure proper distancing.
- Any person who is feeling unwell or suspects they have been exposed to contagious illness is asked to refrain from attending in-person training events. If you are not feeling well on the day of your training or are aware of exposure (within the previous 10 days) to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, we ask that you cancel or reschedule your visit with us, whether or not you appear to be experiencing symptoms of illness. If you need to cancel for this reason, please notify us, and we will be happy to provide program credit equivalent to the registration fees already paid.
Please note: In-person training events are subject to be changed to virtual (via Zoom), rescheduled or canceled depending on current CDC guidelines and/or state and local government recommendations as the date of the training approaches. If such a change is required, registrants will be notified in advance.
CFRE Continuing Education Points
Full participation in this 3-session, 12-hour program is applicable for 12.0 points in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.

NLC/Children’s Board of Hillsborough County (CBHC) No-Show Policy
If you use a CBHC code to register for an NLC event, you will be responsible for paying the registration and processing fees if you do not show up for the class. Please read the full no-show policy here.
