“Leadership is about impact. Even the smallest pebble can stir the biggest wave.” -Emilio Diaz
Emilio Diaz’s professional journey has been anything but ordinary. With a degree in theater and years performing on the stage and screen, Emilio had a revelation. “I realized my theater degree wasn’t for the theater,” he recalls. “It was for my career in nonprofit work.”
Today, Emilio channels his creativity into helping families navigate life’s toughest challenges as a family advocate for the InterCultural Advocacy Institute’s Hispanic Outreach Center in Clearwater, Florida. Here, he provides vital support to families navigating legal, educational, health care and transportation systems.
“Looking back, I see that my theater degree and creative endeavors — storytelling, puppetry, listening — were preparing me for this work,” Emilio says. “It helps me connect with people on a deeper level to hear and understand their stories.”
Today, Emilio’s background brings a unique blend of theatrical creativity, lived experience, and empathy to his nonprofit work. Thanks to the Nonprofit Leadership Center’s Certificate in Grant Writing, he has recently gained critical skills to amplify his impact and confidence.
Entering a New Stage: Nonprofit Leader
When Emilio joined the Hispanic Outreach Center, he was eager to deepen his knowledge of nonprofit operations. At the suggestion of his CEO, he enrolled in the Nonprofit Leadership Center’s Certificate in Grant Writing course.
“I wanted a more active role in the sustainability of our programs,” Emilio says. “Grants are invaluable to nonprofit organizations, and I’ve always wanted to learn how to write one.”
He never imagined how impactful the experience would be — professionally and personally.
Beyond Professional Skills: A Reminder of Belonging
Emilio describes the Certificate in Grant Writing as “challenging but in the right ways.”
His biggest takeaway?
“Being autistic, it sometimes takes me a bit longer to grasp concepts,” Emilio shares. “Abby, the course instructor, would stay after class with me and provide further explanation where I needed it and help me understand the concepts behind what we were learning. Something she said that I will never forget is: ‘You are valued.’ I didn’t realize how much I needed to hear that.”
It wasn’t just the course that gave Emilio newfound skills and confidence — it was the feeling of being seen. “That one comment made me feel like I mattered. It brought me back to a teacher I had as a kid who always believed in me. Abby reminded me of that.

Turning Learning into Action
Since completing his certificate, Emilio has taken a more active role in conversations about sustainability and fundraising.
“I didn’t know anything about grants before, but now I understand the process and importance of this part of nonprofit work. I even plan on joining our fundraising committee,” he says. “I may not be a numbers guy, but I am eager to continue learning how I can help keep our crucial mission alive.”
The certification also helped him see the power of collaboration. “Writing grants is a team effort,” Emilio says. “I learned to build relationships across our many departments, especially with finance. Nonprofit work is like a spiderweb — every piece is connected.”
A Leader Fueled by Compassion
Today, Emilio is more confident than ever in his identity as a leader.
Emilio’s leadership mantra is: “No matter what role you play, you matter. There is no big or small — it’s all big. You are important, and your work makes a difference.”
In the future, Emilio hopes to expand his skills further by exploring grant management, leadership, and even counseling techniques to better serve the families he advocates for. And yes, he plans to take more classes at the Nonprofit Leadership Center.
Emilio advises anyone considering a Nonprofit Leadership Center event to do it: “Even if you think it doesn’t apply to you. In the nonprofit sector, there are so many parts to the puzzle, and the more you know, the more you can help.”
