Being the Change That Changes Everything Starts With Us

Charlie Imbergamo

Raise your hand if you lead or serve on a team that sits back and waits for someone to give you a solution.

As I gazed out across the crowd of more than 700 nonprofit and community leaders at the 2024 Nonprofit Leadership Conference, no one raised their hand. Of course they didn’t.

That’s because nonprofit leaders don’t wait for solutions to appear. We innovate. We find new ways to solve systemic problems. We know the communities we serve deserve more than just good intentions; they deserve bold ideas and transformative action.

It Starts With Us

Innovation. Change. Impact. Learning. Leading.

These aren’t just words or meaningless phrases — they’re calls to action. They are the inspiration that wakes us up each day and compel us to do something good.

And they all start with us.

As nonprofit professionals surrounded by an ecosystem of business, community, and government partners who support our impact on society, we are the drivers of change.

It Starts With Learning

A devastating hurricane season and polarizing political environment have reminded us all this year that we are entrusted to one another’s care. We are our neighbors’ keepers. As we look forward to the future, I have three hopes for what is possible.

  1. I hope the future sees us working more closely than ever together. I hope we look intentionally inward as much as we look out. I hope we can envision new and different solutions together. I hope we look out for one another and the interests of our communities and realize our outcomes are not partisan or political.

  2. I hope our funding partners will prioritize both nonprofit work and the teams who do it. That means seeing value in our work, prioritizing relationships, and where possible, loosening restrictive burdens to increase our capacity to serve.

  3. I hope our community sees in us a sector on fire with possibility, a fire that can warm the coldest hearts and bring light to the darkest places in our lives.

Of course, none of this happens without learning. Our growth as individuals and as organizations depends on our commitment to consistently seek knowledge, listen deeply, and stay curious. Only through continuous learning can we ensure that our impact evolves and strengthens over time. The Nonprofit Leadership Center is here for you in all of that.

Together, we are the catalysts of all that is good in our corners of the world. It all starts with us, and it starts anew today.
